I still can't tell what in the first place upset you that you felt BBC needed to apologize?

I'm a redhead too... Dr. Who loves redheads and wants to be one. So what if he uses the term 'ginger?'

I am somewhat amused by your rant: I have complained to the BBC about their apology.

I am a little disgusted that the apology is not appropriately worded. The word 'ginger' is offensive and derogatory to a great portion of redheaded people.

The BBC uses the word 'ginger' several times in the apology, but decides not to upset the celebs by calling them redheads (the appropriate term). Go figure!)

Let's see.... do we call people black-heads or yellow-heads? Why is it that redheads are reduced to a crayola description while others are brunette or blonde? Isn't that MORE discrimintory than finally using a word--ginger--that makes it less cartoonish sounding?

I can tell you that most redheads I know have a color MUCH closer to ginger than red any day.

Would the word auburn offend you too? What about chestnut brown?

Blondes have about as much discrimination and jokes as redheads and you don't see people getting up in arms about it....

I'm a redhead myself and this particular gripe against the word ginger annoys me to the ends of the earth.....

Another thought is that when Ms Tate was Dr Who's assistant she was called 'ginger' on screen but she is someone who believes that it declares her pride in her colour. She seems oblivious to the totally negative, derogatory image that the word implies. Sheryl Cole is currently in an showing pride in her hair but does she want to be called Brunette, Browny, mudhead, or shithead or any brown equivalent or would she prefer to remain known as Sheryl. I'm saying it is entirely possible that the BBC will use the new redheaded assistant to further their cause to their entitlement to call every redhead 'ginger' which naturally will incite the contempt of the masses to continue with such putdowns. I think it was tanaurus who said making a complaint about such a small issue belies the cumulative effect of the constant, incessant name calling.
It bewilders me that there is a billion, trillion, zillion dollar global hair colouring industry yet our colour must be mentioned at all times, in every situation which is what leads me to believe it is the rest of the world that is insane and not me. When I discussed the deaths of Kelsey 13 and Adam 15 with my psychiatric worker she said I didn't ought to read such things I should distract myself and I'm I taking my drugs. No recognition of the fact that other redheads are being psychiatrically and psychologically damaged and some are dying because of gingerism and reducing a whole human being to a hair colour. Madasa
