Heart A Ginga day is being celebrated across New Zealand today. The day has apparently been renamed from 'Hug A Ginga Day', "to demonstrate 100% support and love for redheaded people all over New Zealand."
Promotion of the renamed event can be credited to Kiwi radio station The Edge.
Interestingly, the use of 'ginga', a word often considered offensive to red heads in the United Kingdom, has had a largely positive influence on red headed Kiwis.
According to 3news.co.nz, one participant says being called 'ginga' is "the ultimate compliment for a redhead". She continues, “This day is one of my favourites as I get gifts like Fanta, redbull, and gingernuts and receive the coolest compliments… this is one of the things that makes it great to be a ginge in NZ.”

I live in New Zealand and from my own experiences, being called a 'ginga' hasn't been a term of endearment.
Though to be honest, that radio station is run by a bunch of fucking muppets anyway, and only brainless fucks listen to it.
I am staunchly against the word 'gay' being used in the derogatory fashion it is accustomed to here.
One of the hosts of the show kept saying it, she thought because her being a self proclaimed 'fag hag' that her friends think its okay.
They are prone to confusing their freedom of speech with shit that actually upsets the group in which it applies most too.
Now I believe in context of how words are spoken, but when a word like 'gay' is used to mean a negative, just like being a 'ginga' is a negative, it kind of means you should reconsider you position if you of course mean what you say and that is 'you don't want to offend others'
